Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

Codeacademy for learning JavaScript

DSCF6379.jpg

During a First Year lecture this week I said that the students should spend some time this Easter learning JavaScript. Everyone should know a bit of JavaScript, it is what makes web sites work, and with the coming of HTML 5 it will be even more important. I’ve just found a really good way to learn it too. (this also works for anyone who fancies doing a bit of programming). Take a look at Codeacademy.

Looks like great fun.

OK I guess for simple little Webby Site Form verification, simple data presentation and pretty visual effectts. But after spending a 4 day course on HTML5 I remain unconvinced that I could ever commit more than 50 lines of javascript.

Debugging Javascript, with only about 20 lines, was horrible experience, trying to various browser tools. Give me C#, strongly typed OO language with good compiler within the comforts of Visual Studio every time. With compiled code I can feel confident in coding 1000+ liens of business and games code.

Unfortunately even Micorosoft has dumped the superior Silverlight (Web) in favour of HTML5. We really cannot contemplate converting our LOB Web Applicaiton in Javascript code. Microsoft has let us down badly, just like they are about to do with XNA on Windows 8 Tablets.

HTML and Berners Lee is leading us to dump 40 years of software engineering progress going down the drain :(

I love JavaScript although it can be hard to compile as it want tell you its gone wrong until you try it and nothing happens or not what you expect dose. But at least we are moving to a better way of making software which dose not make any user have to have any type of system just be able to have a browser that can do a very simple few things it is the future and I thank Rob for bringing it up in the lecture as I did start a bit of a flutter in me to get back on to writing it again.
