Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

Cold Marking

Got a code in the node. I feel kind of bad because I've spent the last couple of days in the labs looking at student work and presumably breathing germs on everyone who has shown me their software. Oh well. According to a study (always the prelude to some enormous whopper or other) young folk today fall prey to all kinds of nasties because they aren't exposed to enough things to challenge their immune system as they grow up. So now I see my sneezing as a kind of social service.

Anyhoo, I really enjoyed the marking. The general standard was excellent. Students could either make a bank application or a game, and the split was around 50:50 over the cohort. I saw some "production quality" banks, with excellent code and some highly playable games.

Good work folks, and I hope I haven't made you too ill.

Hi there Rob.

Using Irared, could you make a game work with two PDAs?

A LAN game, and as well where would one start something like this?

Any ideas?

IrDa complicated compared to bluetooth?

And free?

I should really focus on getting a piece of gfx moving with buttons etc before going further with anything else?

Please at least answer my other question though.

I just get a little inpatient and what to move onto things beyond getting something else done...

The answer to your question is that yes, you can use IrDa to do this. However, it is not easy to do from a code point of view, the IrDa ports would have to be physically close and you could only do two player. Bluetooth is much more flexible, but is also much harder to program.

To be honest, I'd concentrate on moving graphics around the screen before you try anything as ambitious as network games.

@ Richard.

Have you ever coded anything before ? If not you should read internet tutorials based upon what you are interested in. It would always help to understand a language before being too ambitious.

I would advise making a few small demo projects just so you undertsand how to use everything, perhaps making a Pong clone to understand input and AI, make a Breakout clone to understand arrays or making an Asteroids clone to get used to game states.

To make a small game, I'm bored with searching on the web. I'm just waiting for the book I ordered.

That should help me accomplish my objective.

The lAN game will wait or won't happen.

I'm not paying money for doing anything of this sort.

I don't have spare cash for something like this.

VS 2005 standard edtion is £200

So I am on a time limit 23 july 2008 expire date.

@Richard
That doesn't make sense to me. But, then again, you are very small...I always like going South, somehow it feels like going downhill.

My objective is to build a 2D game, I now have that book I ordered. So It shouldn't be a problem now.

Um, It's for the pocket pc eventually.

I'm using Visual studio 2008, three month trial.

So this is a timed project, to get an understanding while getting a game built for my pocket pc.

I will then try javascript and possibly python, since it also has some sort of pocket pc possibility for programming.

Javascript just for interest / education.

I bought the book for collision detection, as where ever I looked except for Rob's MSDN pages.

I couldn't find a good gaming tutorial / guide. So this book was my only way, thanks to Rob for finding it for me!

Good luck to you sir.

His nose should pant
and his lip should curl,
His cheeks should flame
and his brow should furl,
His bosom should heave
and his heart should glow,
And his fist be ever ready
for a knock-down blow.

I may just need even more of that!
