Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

Win an LG Optimus 7 Windows Phone

LG Optimus 7

Coming to your pocket soon?

Thanks go to Sheryl for sending me an LG Optimus 7 phone to take a look at. She has also sent one for me to give away, so I proudly announce the “Optimus Quest” competition.

Send me your ideas for Windows Phone Marketplace programs and I’ll give the phone as a prize to the best idea. You can find full details in the Rob Miles Optimus Quest Competition pages.

I’m going to be using an Optimus 7 (not the prize one – that is staying in the box all shiny and new) for the next few days and I’ll let you know what I think of it. First impressions – very nice indeed.

The only apps I could suggest are ones I would love to see appear:

4OD & BBC Iplayer apps, for viewing, searching & watching the videos provided through their services.

Some sort of basic 3D CAD software for making basic 3D models on the go.

A mobile adaptation of the computer game "Portal" which I believe to be the cleverest game created, but I wouldnt know how to bring the qualities of the game over to a mobile version.

A MSDN app for looking through the MSDN library as a reference for developers who may want to look up some piece of code on the go.

The last idea is something I feel Microsoft should make themselves & include by default. Paint. Its one of the basic Windows programs for the desktop. Everyone knows what it is, so why has it never been included in the mobile OS? I know its probably because the devices havent been powerful enough for a decent drawing app till recent years, but still, its something I feel should be made, & made properly.

A game we played on paper in school. We called it "Dots", but I wasn't able to find any reference to a similar game in English.

The game goes like this:

You have a grid (virtually unlimited or large enough, doesn't matter). Players (there were always 2 but I don't see problems with having more than 2) place dots on the grid in turns until one of them builds a loop around one or more of the opponent's dots. Those captive dots are now inactive and the loop is connected with "walls" so opponent's loops can't go through walls. The game continues until the board is full (or some arbitrary target). The player who has captured more dots wins.

I've actually started developing this game but stopped because I realized that making a decent AI for this game is a little more complicated than I can do without deeper research in the field and I'm not very interested in that.

Great ideas folks. You can put them here if you like, or you can email them to optimusquest@robmiles.com. See http://www.robmiles.com/optimusquest/ for more details.

I would like to see an App that targets iPhone users and shows them:

1. The equivelant way of doing things on WP7
2. What is new on WP7 compared to the iPhone (functionality wise)
3. What is new on WP7 that doesn't have an immediate counterpart on the iPhone.

No Apps to be covered (that is too broad) save for any that ship with the product?

A great app would be to produce Monty Python quotes or Python tasks for the day.
Love to Challenge people and see how many different Silly walks they can perform in places. Would have to be shared to compare challenge results.

Darn there goes my Secret.

@Alan Mendelevich

If you've got an iPhone or iPod Touch search "Dots Free". Or alternatively search "Optime Software". They do lots of crazy board game ports.
