Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

Carcassonne

While we have been on holiday we have been playing some new games. Number one son got a copy of Carcassonne. We have had some fun with it (and I’m not just saying this because I managed to win a couple of times). The game revolves around a landscape that is built up by players adding tiles and different types of settler to claim as much of the land as they can. It has just the right balance of skill and luck. When I win I can claim skill, but when I lose I can claim that the cards were against me. The games don’t take a long time to play, (which is something else I quite like about them) but they are quite absorbing.

If you like board games it is well worth a look.

I've been playing it for a few years, I suggest in the expansions, they add much more to the game, especially 'The Tower' - In which you can kidnap other player's meeple. The 360 version is also worth a look. You can find it on XBLA.

If you like Carcassonne then you'll love Space Hulk. That game however does take a while and is pretty difficult to play, but when you learn it gets a whole lot better!

Why play these strategy games?

Build a PC - the most realistic RTS available today.

Match the right componenets, scout outlets for various prices and strike when the sales arrive. Then build the PC and fiddle with it until it installs, then reinstall all your programs and mess around with settings and tweaks and firefox extentions.

Ha. Been doing that for the last 20 years or so. I've now advanced to much higher levels: "Try to get two devices to work consistently over Bluetooth" or "Try to get a Sony PS3s and computers to talk HDMI to a Sony Receiver and a Sony TV successfully".

I had a real problem getting my PS3 and my (then) 22" TV to work with HDMI. In the end it was a software update (and a month and a half of rubbishy composite connection) until the problem was fixed.
