Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

In Search of Power

I'm going away tomorrow for TechED 2005. Cue frantic scurrying around and selection of bits and bobs to take with me. Today I bought some new re-chargeable batteries. I did this for two reasons:

  1. I can spend money on a gadgety type thing and still feel good about saving the planet (which is apparently quite trendy at the moment).
  2. Most re-chargeable batteries I get don't work properly.

I find that the name is very appropriate. You can re-charge them. However, this does not guarantee that they will actually do anything once the light on the charger goes green.

The only ones which really deliver the goods are the lithium-ion ones. All the other ones with scary sounding names, nickel-cadnium and nickel-metal hydride, absorb significant amounts of energy, get warm, and then go flat as soon as you try to get anything useful out of them.

The only good news on the horizon is that the latest batteries have really impressive amp/hour numbers written on their sides and they seem to be getting cheaper. So I've got some.

But I'm taking some non-rechargeables just in case.

Is that the Tech Ed in Vegas at the Mandalay Bay? If so I'll see you there. If your teaching I'll look for you on the schedule, since I really enjoyed your MEDC 06 Lectures.

You should head back home, Rob. You're a year late!

Sorry, I'm not in Vegas. I'm in Barcelona. And my keyboard would seem to be a year slow.....

Oh well, I'm here at the one in Vegas. Never mind, still the same old Microsoft prop.. to which I owe my living :). Interesting that MS is now pushing .net and AJAX (JavaScript) for a rich application... vbscript is dead :). That was what the whole key note was about here... AJAX. I went to a UI design conference on Boston last month and AJAX was the focal point. Interesting considering that MS is now pushing a mix a proprietary (.NET) and non proprietary (JAVASCRIPT) as rich???? Anyway Vegas is Vegas. This is like the 20th time I’ve been here.. All hookers and gambling on the side, neither of which I like. Going to the ET highway (area 51) on Friday, maybe I will be abducted and can give a new prospective on UI design at next years tech Ed????? Anyway, I miss the New Forest, which is where I grew up. States has now real concept of good bitter, or cider.. every thing is so fake in Vegas, take me home to Wyoming…
