Thought for the Dazed

I've had to give up that Distance Learning course as I was having trouble seeing the teacher.

I just discovered your videos with Andy at Channel9. First, I'd like to thank you very much for offering this material. I am looking into programming Windows 7 phones and my kids (11 & 12) are just starting programming themselves (on Lego NXT and some graphical programming programs like RPGmaker). They love your jokes BTW. It will probably crush them though when they discover I didn't make them up myself.

Anyway, I googled you and discovered not only this site but verysillygames.com (oh, I mentioned my kids above because I plan onusing the vids at verysillgames.com to start them on C# programming). I've begun watching the vids there and in the second one you show a game called "Mystic Game," but I can't seem to find the source code anywhere. What I do find is source for Moodlight which has difficulty converting over to Visual Studio Express 2010. So I have two questions:

Is there somewhere I can find the source code for Mystic Game and is there somewhere I could download Visual Studio Express 2008 and, if I did, would it install properly alongside 2010. I guess that's three questions, sorry.

Once more, thank you so much for your lessons. You have a wonderful way of making what could be very complex and intimidating quite simple and friendly.

Hi. Glad you like the stuff. I'm presently in the middle of a big writing thingy which should be finished soon. When it is I'm going to do some work on bringing the material up to date and move VerySillyGames over onto this blog where I can keep a closer eye on it. So the best thing I can say just right now is hold on for a little while and I'll catch up with all this stuff..

We've gotten to the end of the series and you never referenced "mystic game" again. It wasn't part of the course as I had thought so I guess never mind, but thank you very much for your response.

Thirteen 1 does, however, have "session 1.2" twice and "session 1.3" not at all. It appears that in the issue that is supposed to contain "session 1.3" the magic video boxy-thingy they use is linked to the previous video (1.2). Not something you have any control over though I assume, but I thought you might like to know.

Anyway, thanks so much again for these videos. My 12 year old now understands the basics of C# and is pretty darn excited about learning more (me too).

BTW, "Microsoft XNA Game Studio 3.0: Learn Programming Now!" is currently in my Amazon cart just waiting for my wife to tell me I can click "Proceed to Checkout," and I look forward to whatever you have coming up next.

Come to think of it (and sorry, this is terribly off topic), you wouldn't happen to be working on "Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0: Learn Programming Now!" would you?

Yep. I am working on version 4.0. And you can get the version 3.0 book as a free download. Check out the links (and other stuff) here:

Great! Thanks for the link, I couldn't find the version 3.0 book there, but I downloaded "Introduction to Programming Through Game Development Using Microsoft XNA Game Studio," and "The Yellow Book. Those should keep me plenty busy. And I got "Learn Programming with XNA" to teach the kiddies! Yeah!

I'll be waiting with bated breath (too many kippers) for the new book.

Oh, and I have a joke, but its verbal only, it doesn't work written:
Q. What do you call a fish without any eyes?
A. A fsh.
